Evelyn Avery began selling art from her dining room table in 1992 - an endeavor that became so popular that she soon hired a staff and began offering custom framing.
Nearly 20 years later, Eveyln's elegant atelier at Avery Fine Art has become a destination for designers in search of 18th, 19th and 20th century oils and works on paper as they decorate their clients' homes. Private clients rely on her to find - and frame - just the right piece for their collections.
Evelyn travels to Europe every year, hand-picking art and antique frames to bring back to her workshop. The shop employs eight highly skilled artisans who use old-world methods to design and create frames and finishes for each piece of art. They also painstakingly restore the antique frames, which Evelyn designates for specific works she has chosen abroad.
The shop also builds custom media cabinets, upholstered headboards, lamp bases, and mirrors in any shape or size. And Evelyn offers private consultation services, too, traveling to clients' homes to help them reframe or re-hang existing collections.
Avery Fine Art features Evelyn's collection of oils and works on paper mainly from France, Russia, and the United Kingdom, dating from the 18th century to the middle 20th century. She taught herself French so she wouldn't have to rely on a "picker" to select works for her - she does it all herself. As a wise art dealer once told her, "You can't train your eye if you don't see the bad."
"We will make one piece, one time, one way," Evelyn says. "We are the designer's tools. We allow the designer to become the craftsman."
Every frame at Avery Fine Art is made to order in any style or finish, from gold or silver leaf to faux tortoise shell. There is also a large collection of whimsical designs and children's frames. If you don't see a frame you like among the existing samples, Evelyn's workshop will create a custom design. The workshop also does period reproductions and antique frame restoration.
Designers and private clients make custom requests all the time. Some requests, such as framed media screens, have become a staple of the Avery Fine Art collection.
Mirrors are also a great way to highlight a special frame, and the design - and size - possibilities are endless.
And more recently, the Avery artisans have started designing and building home furnishings, such as custom headboards and lamp bases. Please click on each category to see some of the offerings.
The skilled artisans at Avery Fine Art are capable of restoring damaged art and frames that might otherwise seem gone forever. A current project in the shop includes restoring a decorative screen that was heavily damaged in a New Orleans home during Hurricane Katrina.

Our media screens can house flat-screen televisions, sound and stereo equipment or even white boards for conference rooms. Each screen is designed and built specifically for the object it will cover and the space where it will be hung. Customers can choose art from the Avery collection or supply their own, and the framing, of course, is designed around it.

The design, size and materials for a mirror frame are only limited byt the client's imagination. The artisans at Avery Fine Art individually sketch each design, which they keep in a large portfolio. Do you like the one round design, but want it square? No problem. Do you like the gold frame, but want it in a natural wood finish? Done. Evelyn and her artisans have the most fun with mirrors, because there are absolutely no limitations on how they can be made.
Loyal customers have encouraged Evelyn and her staff at Avery Fine Art to branch into new areas outside of what can simply be hung on a wall - to the point where there is almost nothing they cannot do. They can now build custom headboards, create specialized lamp bases and other accessories, and even mix a leather dye to restore upholstery on an old chair. Give them a new challenge and they will embrace it.
